Gary, one of the oldest stallions in the park, had the oldest mare, Ghost, in his band for many years. They were usually found between I 94 and the south loop in the area of Ridge-line Trail. He kept a quite stable harem of mares for the last several years but became very thin in the late fall of 2016. Gary and Ghost died later that winter. The rest of the band, including Ghost's young colt, were taken by Little Sorrel, but Little Sorrel only had them a short time before Gray Ghost took the band. Rosie, the pretty bay roan mare who wound up with Half Moon, is one on which I have never quite determined the ancestry. I've made some speculations, but, though I know she is from the wild herd, her background remains a mystery. Ranger took over the rest of the band in the fall of 2018.
